How often do you daydream? Really just allow your mind to wander and dream about what could be different in your life right now. It can sometimes be a short fantasy to imagine a World where you didn’t have the current problem you are facing. Some may call it wishful thinking. Others may call it visualisation and manifestation. To me, it is positive-constructive daydreaming that helps create your perfect day.
The purpose of this post and exercise is to encourage you get to get clarity on your perfect day. Being aware of what your perfect day looks like and feels like can keep you on path when little or big challenges come your way. It can also help you make the big decisions about your career.
"Everything is created twice. First in the mind and then in reality." - Robin S. Sharma
Side note, the perfect day is the perfect every day. So it needs to be attainable. If the daydream is solely focussed on being on a yacht in the Mediterranean, which would be an epic day. You still need to find the way to fund that yacht (cue my Italian holiday pics below).
The thing I love most about the perfect day imagination is that each time I do it, something new arises. But often the underlying parts are the same. Doing this regularly activates many different functions of the brain because it taps into your emotions, memory, and thoughts.
It lets your subconscious speak to you about what is aligning to that perfect day and what might not be. There is no right or wrong, but the awareness it creates can be powerful.
There is a huge body of work to support the value of visualisations, it is a powerful tool for practicing and developing all of your mental skills. It also:
Improves skills for to achieve your goals
Enhances emotional management
Improves motivation, belief and self-image
So this is an exercise you can do anywhere, although not recommended when operating heavy machinery. Also not recommended to do if you are in a rush.
And so it begins.
Sit down with your feet on the floor, legs and arms uncrossed. Take three deep, long breaths in and out.
Close your eyes. This is more effective when eyes are closed as it removes distractions.
Now think about waking up in the morning, you are well rested and alert, it is quiet. Imagine where you are, what the room looks like and who you are with. Maybe the kids are still sleeping or have arisen quietly and are playing peacefully.
Then as you get out of bed, start to think about how you feel. Are you calm, energized?
Allow your imagination to take over and almost steer you through your morning. Do you log on to check emails over coffee? Perhaps it is meeting a friend for a run?
Feel yourself move within the space, whilst also feeling each moment with emotion. Feel yourself reaching for things, such as walking through a door. As you go about your day, visualise the people in your life you are seeing on this day, how are you engaging with them, what are you talking about? The people that give you energy.
Imagine the environment, are you inside or outside? Are you in your current workplace or visualising somewhere different. That’s ok, you may be thinking of somewhere you’ve been before or somewhere completely new. Daydream with a level of specificity, are you working on the computer or talking to people all day? Are you serving others or perhaps making something?
Sit with your emotions and the sense of calm you have. As you are travelling home from your day, are you happy to walk through the door? How do you greet your family or housemates? Or are you looking forward to your dinner for one, just the way you like it?
What does your home feel like? Is it warm? Perhaps it is a new home or with that renovation you’ve always dreamed about.
As you reflect on your perfect day, what are you most grateful for? Is it the people or perhaps your surroundings? Maybe you experienced a sense of flow in the day.
Try to do this regularly as you can, after a few times if you start to notice a pattern you can write it down or share with a friend. This exercise is a good sign post to help you along your way in life and make decisions which align with you embodying and living your perfect day.
If you find it challenging to get into the zone, you could also use a guided visualisation meditation audio. Jess Shepherd, Fearless Soul and Rising Higher Meditation is a personal favourite.
Finally, after you've completed the perfect day visualisation. Write it down by hand. Then put it up someplace you will see it every day.
If you want to share your perfect day with me I would really love to hear it, just drop me an email.
