Leaders transform organisations, it doesn’t mean that everyone always follows. What sets great leaders apart is they have higher standards of themselves.
By raising your standards means that you don’t accept less. You turn your “shoulds” into “musts”. If you think you should do something, will you do it? You might when it’s convenient or easy. If you must, you will always find a way. This shows up in your consistent behaviours.
Often we may find that we have set our standards a long time ago. Or they have been influenced by who we spend time with the most. Think about the anecdote of the frog, it goes into boiling water and jumps out. Put the frog in cool water and slowly turn the heat up and it slowly boils. How does that apply to you? Is who you spend time with, who you’ve become?
Take a moment to ponder that.
If you want to change your life, raise your standards. Surround yourself with people with higher standards. Play against someone who is better than you. Seek out the qualities that you want to emulate. Just to be around them will raise your standards.
When you switch your thinking to what you must do. Your brain will start to identify opportunities within your environment. This won’t come on a silver platter straight away. But if you consciously make the decision to raise your standards there will be things that fall into place and you will rise up.
Deep down you know what needs to change. You already know what standards are compromised or average. Don't settle for less than you can be.
So what is the one thing you will do today to raise your standards?
